Distance covered: 10 km
Temperature: 38 °C
Our hike started at 9h45 on Saturday morning for what was to be a tough climb down into the canyon. Luckily there were chains placed at strategic points near the steepest part of the trail to aid in the descent. There was sufficient water in the canyon but none for the first hour and a half of walking – when they say carry 3 litres of water, they mean it!
We finally reached the bottom of the descent which opened onto a sandy beach. After a short rest we continued down the canyon, following a well-marked trail. The going was tough with the terrain alternating between soft sand and boulders. This type of terrain was to continue for the next 3 days.
After hiking in 38 °C temperature for 3 hours and only covering 10km, we were feeling rather jaded and decided to look for an overnight campsite, well short of our 15km target for the first day. We set up camp on the banks of a river and felt a little refreshed after having a dip in the cool water of the Fish River. The beers probably helped a bit as well .
